iPad 2 : The Good, The Bad & The Ugly !

iPad 2 : The Good, The Bad & The Ugly !

Last month the much awaited iPad 2 was launched and by the, end of the month, many could lay their hands on it. The Internet is now flooded with analysis and firsthand experience of iPad 2 users. As all of you know, since the launch of iPad two years ago, it hogged most of tech media attention and Apple could sell almost 15 million iPads within a year. Is it a magical device as Steve says? How does iPad 2 compare with iPad and its competitors?

Why is it so successful?

Apple is successful in convincing people the need for a Tablet with iPad (which Microsoft failed to do in 2000) which fits between a notebook and a smart phone, which is faster to boot , easy to handle, does most of your routine tasks, has a pleasing display , a with a performance no one can complain about. Most importantly, the interaction with iPad looks very natural for people, namely, swiping and pinching can put even a Grandma at ease! The iPad is designed with very limited external interfaces to reduce complications for most of the users, but one can find ways of getting most of his daily routine done within the Apple ecosystem. Earlier, one was relying on his /her Laptop for the same. The Apple iTunes store has more than 65000 applications to download. Apple is therefore, successful in satisfying the need of the tech savvy, as well as the common man in style! So we cannot but agree with Steve when he calls it a magic device.

All said and done in its current avatar iPad cannot completely replace a Laptop. It may not be very attractive for creating large documents, or tasks which demand PC style multitasking or need for large screen.

What are the important differences between iPad and iPad 2?

  1. iPad 2 is much thinner (8.8m, thinner than iPhone 4) and lighter (601gm): All the users of iPad 2 appreciate this when one needs to hold it for long; and wish a thinner and lighter device. Even though it is much lighter compared to the competitive devices, one cannot compare its weight with eBook readers like Kindle. One can expect the iPad 3 to come with Carbon fiber body which makes it much lighter. As per most of the iPad 2 owners, its aluminum rounded contour in the bottom makes it more comfortable to hold.
  2. Faster performance with Dual core A5 CPU. This makes iPad 2 much faster to load your web pages and combined with its GPU provides a 9X faster graphics so you can expect the launch of many new games with more detailed graphics. Users of the iPad have always marveled at the speed and never really understood how Apple can do this with just 256K RAM. The iPad 2 is believed to have 512K RAM. All the reviewers agree that performance specification of all competitors look good only on paper and real World story is totally different.
  3. Front and rear Cameras. VGA resolution of the front camera is more than enough for Face Time, the Skype like apps from Apple. All the reviewers agree that the rear camera is good enough for 720P video but there is difference of opinion about the quality of still pictures it can take. Most of them are not happy, so it is not a substitute for a point and shoot digital camera. I thought it looks funny to take photos with something as big as iPad 2.
  4. Outputs 1080P video through a HDMI cable: It needs a special cable which goes to the normal dock connector in one end and the other end spots an HDMI port and extends the 30 pin dock connector. So you can charge the iPad while watching 1080P in your Home TV which is a welcome change compared to the earlier similar offerings from Apple for iPod where video out drains the battery at a faster rate compared to the rate at which it can charge L
  5. Improved screen display: Resolution remains the same as 1024 X 768. Many have noticed an improvement in viewing angle with richer and truer colors.
  6. New Innovative Cover: Apple really surprised us with this one. All the existing iPad casing suffers from the following issues: (a) It spoils the beauty of iPad. It is no secret that Apple wants its products to be bare to admire its beauty. (b) It comes in the way of a few accessories causing issues (c) It adds to weight which really unfortunate. So Apple came up with an innovative solution which covers only what needs to be covered (screen) and snaps in place using magnets making it easier to add and remove. It can put the iPad to sleep too. Moreover it can double up as a stand. It is available in Polyurethane ($39/-) and Leather casing ($69/-) in various colors and with its reasonable pricing Apple made it sure that most people will buy this as a compulsory accessory.
  7. Two popular MAC applications (iMovie and GarageBand): These are sort of demo applications to show the capabilities of iPad 2 similar to what Steve showed “The Elements” during the launch of iPad. Both are rewritten for iPad to make use of its unique capabilities and I am sure many teenagers will buy iPad for GarageBand alone. iMovie works only on iPad 2 (iPhone 4 version is different) whereas GarageBand is available on both iPad and iPad 2.
What is missing in iPad 2?
  1. Retina display: By early Jan 2011 many expected iPad 2 would surprise everybody with a Retina display, i.e. 2048x 1538 pixels which is exactly double of the current display resolution. But this would have put enormous challenge on the CPU, battery, and cost which may not necessarily boost the user experience in the same scale. Apple preferred to go slow and launch iPad 2 in time and make it available in stores which are the key where most of the competitors failed. An incremental display resolution will cause issues for the existing applications so Apple is expected to go with 2X in iPad 3.
  2. Lack of SD card memory reader: Apple prefers to offer a thinner tablet and the new built in camera which means one can snap and stores photos within the Tablet for immediate use. For better photos one can always use point and shoot camera and transfer the photos using camera connector.
  3. Lack of USB interface: Apple’s new and enhanced features like Home sharing and Air Play and with its Wii capabilities you may not really miss USB port, rather you prefer a super thin Tablet. With a handy USB port people would have stuck many more devices causing Apple many headaches. One can expect a Thunderbolt interface in the next generation iPad
  4. 128GB Storage: With 128GB, double of the current iPad storage of 64GB Apple would have been forced to increase the price, which obviously they want to avoid.
Is it worth buying iPad 2?

If you are yet to buy a Tablet, time is ripe to get an iPad 2. I am sure that without iPad you are missing lot of fun in life. If you already have an iPad it is better to trade in or give to your dear ones and upgrade to iPad 2. Or you can wait for iPad 3 with lot more exciting features which are believed to be introduced within a year. But it cannot make up the time you have already lost in experiencing the device which is going to rule during the post PC era.

How much it cost?

iPad 2 cost remains same as of iPad. It starts at $499/- for the basic model and the top end model costs $829/- There are 6 models, 3 with Wii only and 3 with Wifi+3G. Comes in different storages 16GB/32GB/64GB.

Top 30 Apps for Apple iPad

Top 30 Apps for Apple iPad

In this post, I will cover Top 30 applications which make iPad a magical device. These applications are specifically designed to use the capabilities of a Tablet compared to a Laptop or desktop. I may be talking more about apps which treat iPad as content consumption device rather than content creation device but it is changing fast with more and more productivity apps available in iTunes stores. Infact as Analysts pointed out during the iPad 2 launch Steve had taken a more aggressive posture inspite of his ill health, to drive the point that he considers it as a content creation device compared to the relaxing posture (sitting in a sofa) he took while launching the original iPad.

Again, the following list of applications is my own pick from experience of running more than 250apps for 10 months on my iPad. You may not find your favorite games on the list since I am hardly interested in electronic games and do not have firsthand experience to comment on it. The following applications are specially written for Tablets and will convince anybody that related desktop apps are no match in giving the same user experience. I have not included any apps which come along with iPad, since all of them are excellent, but may be quite familiar.

1. Flipboard (www.flpboard.com)

Named Apple's iPad App of the Year and one of TIME's top 50 innovations of 2010, Flipboard is a fast, beautiful way to flip through news, photos and updates your friends are sharing on Facebook, Twitter, Google Reader, Flickr and Instagram. You can see your social media in a magazine layout that is easy to scan and fun to read, share articles and photos, and comment on posts. Customize your Flipboard with sections created from your favorite news, people, blogs and topics.

Your Flipboard is everything you care about in one place. It's your magazine. It's your Flipboard. This alone is enough to convince anybody to buy a Tablet. Honorable mention goes to Pulse News which is also great news aggregator.

2. News360 (http://news360app.com/)

News360 for iPad aggregates more than 1000 different news sources around the web to bring you news stories in a concise and useful stream. The presentation is excellent. This app brings News slide show when you rotate your iPad to Landscape mode. In portrait mode it gives a lot flexibility to configure news sources with the touch of a single button. One soft button gives all the local news making use of the current location information and local media! You can configure to have your own favorites news sources too. This is the best apps for Newsjunkies.

3. Garageband (www.apple.com)

This Apple application is for music lovers who want to play any musical instrument without really owning one. Those familiar with its original Mac version will be more thrilled to see this .It gives almost a real world experience. For a guitar, you tap on the display to play individual notes, strum chords, or bend notes; you can even touch the strings in two places at the same time to mute. The intensity at which you strike the notes and chords affects the volume of the sound, like on a real guitar. There's also an on-screen piano and drum kit, which offer similar features and controls. Overall you will be really impressed with the sound quality too.

4. FastPDF+ (http://fastpdf.eu/)

iPad is a great eBook reader too. You can read both epub (native format) and pdf files in color in iPad unlike Kindle. Its bright LCD display is a boon to people who are in their late 40s or older since its brightness is easy on the eyes unlike e-ink display in Kindle. Recently a study report from a renowned Ophthalmologists in the US, states that there is no evidence to prove that e-ink is better than LCD display for long duration of reading , unlike what the eBook industry wanted us to believe!

iPad's built in eBook reader iBook is excellent but it has a few limitations. You cannot create folders to segregate books or transfer a book without connecting to iTunes. FastPdf+ addresses these two limitations for pdf files. It can import any pdf books from your PC through Wi-Fi and a browser, it can download books directly from any URL and create any number of folders which appear as trays arranged in the shelf as shown in the figure.

5. IMDB - Internet Movie Data Base

If you are a movie lover this is a must have application for your iPad. It can access more than 1.5M movie and TV database with information on 3 million actors and actresses, directors and crew members. It is amazing to see the entire menu change, to bring up all the related information you are reading.

Users can also use the app to watch movie trailers in HD, find localized movie show times in the United States, browse photo galleries and shop for DVD and Blu-ray releases.

6. The Elements & Solar System (http://touchpress.com)

These are educational titles and may be the largest application (1.8GB and 850MB) showcasing the capabilities of iPad. The elements present the periodic table where you can touch and feel each element and the more you play with the crystal, the more information it brings out. Steve used these apps to demonstrate the capabilities of original iPad at its launch.

The solar system apps give the same kind of experience about solar system. All the planets and their satellites are given in detail and even allow you to play God, you can spin each one at your will at your own pace. In the process you learn a lot about their planets and their satellites. Both are fun to use and I am sure that you and your kids will enjoy learning chemistry and Astronomy.

7. Wikipanion, Discovery, Article

Wikipanion is for accessing Wikipedia and formatting it for iPad and iPhone. Discovery and Article are separate applications to access Wikipedia and presenting it in more attractive form in iPad. So these are must have applications to give all information at your fingertips.

8. TuneIn: (www.tunein.com)

This app is for Radio lovers. This brings 30000 FM and AM stations around the Globe, local to you no matter how far your home may be.

9. PrintCentral (http://mobile.eurosmartz.com/products/printcentral.html)

The built-in iPad Air print supports only very few wireless printers and your printer is not in the list, do not rush to buy one which supports it. You can install Print central and make almost any Wi-Fi printer compatible with Airprint.

It works with Bluetooth enabled printers as well as USB printers. For USB printers connected to your PC or Mac in the same network you need to install WePrint Printer Server , which is available as a free download – and essentially turns you standard printer into an Air Printer :)

10. Dropbox

iPad's lack of USB port is a deal breaker for many. But you can easily solve this by Dropbox which is a free app to store your files in net and access from anywhere anytime and using any device :) So do not allow the lack of USB port limit you anyway. You need to be futuristic :) Apple is expected to announce free MobileMe service in April '11, uplift us to Apple's version of cloud computing. So we may never be encouraged to even think of USB storage again!

11. iWorks
Pages, Keynote and Numbers Apple's productivity suite equivalent of Word, PowerPoint and Excel

12. Angry Birds

You can’t ignore this. Millions got hooked, you can’t be an exception. Simple and easy to understand game

13. Evernote:

It is note taking and archiving application. A "note" can be a text, a full webpage or webpage excerpt, a photograph, a voice memo, or a handwritten note. Notes can also have file attachments. Notes can then be sorted into folders, tagged, annotated, edited, given comments, and searched. A great application for all of us and with Evernote no excuse for forgetting anything.

14. Skype

Brings VOIP calls and video conferencing to iPad

15. Instapaper (www.instapaper.com )

You can always postpone reading an interesting webpage by clicking read later button on your browser and Instapaper will save it (in their website) for you. Visit their website later you have time to read all those.

16. VLC

Your favorite VLC played for iPad , unfortunately it is removed from iTunes stores now due to protest from open source community and CineX is an option to play your favorite DiVX movies

17 .FindPhone

Never lose your iPad, even if it is robbed, you are in control and you can track him to his rat hole and wipe him out, (sorry your data) and it is free!

18. Friendly

Facebook never released its official apps for iPad, you need to content with Friendly best among the “me too apps list”, not a great apps.

19. Twitter

Excellent twitter client for your iPad

20. Talking Tom

To amuse your kids with iPad, and in the process you may get amused too!

21. NightStand, Flip Clock

Both apps are for setting Alarms in style and wake you up with more information about today's weather than you care, touch the screen it tells the time.

22 .SoundHound, (Shazam)

Both are great apps if you are a music lover, it can even recognize the song you are trying to sing.

23. Scrabble

Old family game but in iPad style, great implementation and you can even use your iPhone and iPod Touch as Tile Rack using either Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. Nice family game to show off if you are travelling by train!

24. Desi Radio
You can tune to your favorite Desi music, Hindi or any regional language

25. Toystory 3

This is the best way to tell great stories to your children, it even reads the story for them and put them to sleep, something which you thought only your wife can do! There are many other “read along” stories available for iPad, most of them are great implementation. Ex: Jack and the Beanstalk Children's Interactive Storybook, Alice in Wonderland etc.

26. iMovie

The great Mac application for editing movies comes to your iPad. The easy-to-use app makes good use of the tablet's touch-screen interface, and lets you clip, add photos, music, themes, and more to the video you capture right on the iPad 2.

After your first family movie is out you may head to Bollywood looking for directing the next one!. It needs iPad 2 and a separate version is available for iPhone4 )

27. Dictionary

A must have application for us with built-in pronunciations!

28. Indian Trains

Railway Ticket availability, PNR Status, scheduled and expected arrival of train in real-time. It is a native iPhone apps but an essential apps for Indians in iPad too

29. Guardian Eyewitness

Daily it adds one excellent photo to your collection.

30. Galatta Cinema

Free apps for South Indian Cinema lovers, online magazine with all the gossips you like to hear about your favorite stars! There may be other apps for Bollywood movies, I am not sure.

There are other essential apps like Bangalore City Transit giving all the bus numbers and routes with maps. Radio Taxi for booking Meru or Easy cab for Bangalore, Hyderabad, Delhi and Chennai . These are iPhone apps but works in iPad too.

I have not mentioned many outstanding apps which use camera features of iPad 2 since most of them are already available in iPhone now and it needs a separate discussion. With iPhone 4 you have a scanner (Jonet Pro), barcode reader (RedLaser), translator (Google Translate, Talk to your phone in English and it talks back in Hindi!), and it even dial the printed number by pointing its camera to it.

Do you really need a 3G iPad or iPad with Wi-Fi is sufficient?

If you are not a very frequent traveller who carries iPad with you everywhere, you may not need 3G and can save $100/- What you lack in Wi-Fi iPad is 3G and GPS.

With Personal Hotspot implemented in iOS 4.3 your iPhone 4 can act as a 3G to Wi-Fi router and you can connect your Wi-Fi iPad or laptop to it for browsing, up to 5 devices. But please remember that Hotspot will drain your iPhone battery faster than you like. Personal hotspot implementation even passes the GPS information to your iPad so navigation is also not an issue. So saving a $100 is not a bad idea if you carry along your iPad not very frequently. iPhone 3GS will support tethering only through Bluetooth whereas iPhone 4 supports both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth tethering .

Apart from iPhone almost all other smart phones also give personal hotspot functionality. Personal Hotspot software is available for all Nokia phones, and Windows 7 phones. It cost under Rs. 600/- for premium version. Visit http://www.joikuspot.com/ for more details.

Regardless of whether you’re a surfer, race car driver, or cyclist, GoPro HD cameras and accessories allow you to capture every amazing second of your most thrilling adventures.

We strongly encourage you to try out a GoPro HD HERO camera for yourself — we think you’ll agree with us when we tell you that these little babies are about as addicting as anything we’ve come across in a long while.

GoPro HD HERO Review – The Best POV Camera?

In this GoPro HD HERO review we’ll share reasons why these cameras are gaining notoriety with trailblazers and daredevils as a way to record their adventures – whether surfers, race car drivers, skiers, or cyclists. These compact digital cameras – aptly named HERO because of their ability to make their user look like a hero during their favorite sport or activity – are quickly becoming a household name when it comes to shooting sports and adventure video.

One of the coolest features of these point of view cameras are the size. Being small, lightweight, and portable, the cameras are easy and convenient to take anywhere. You can easily mount the cameras to surfboards, helmets, or to a car for a spirited drive. You can even mount cameras to gear in normally awkward places, like on a mountain bike’s handlebars, without the weight interfering with your performance. These cameras are so small and light you forget you’re wearing or using it.

GoPro Review

But don’t let the size of the cameras fool you – the GoPro HD HERO has amazing capabilities. These digital cameras shoot up to 4 hours of 1080 p HD video – and the video is awesome in stunning high definition. The killer 170 wide angle models provide the largest field of view of any other wearable camera on the market, crucial for capturing every bump, curve, and jump whether you’re riding a new trail or practicing some outrageous new tricks on your skateboard. The cameras allow you to capture every minute on film from your own unique perspective.

In addition, the cameras take 5 MP still time lapse photos. Simply press the shutter button once and you can record up to 2 ½ hours of high quality photos. Perform your sickest tricks and the cameras will do the rest of your work capturing all your skills in perfect consecutive order. How cool is that? Of course, the cameras also have self-timers allowing you to get those traditional group shots.

Professional Quality, Full HD Video
1080p, 960p, and 720p in 30 and 60 fps (720p). The HD HERO line of cameras offers three different HD resolutions, giving you three filming modes to capture the best angles for any given activity:
  • 1080p: 1920x1080 True HD featuring a 127 degrees angle of view, 30 fps, and 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio
  • 960p: 1280x960 Ultra Wide and Tall HD featuring a 170 degrees angle of view, 30 fps, and 4:3 aspect ratio. See more of the action above and below than widescreen16:9 resolutions can show.
  • 720p: 1280x720 Ultra Wide HD featuring a 170 degrees angle of view, both 30 and 60 fps, and 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio
5MP Photos, Automatically

HD HERO cameras can shoot hands-free, 5 megapixel photos automatically at 2 / 5 / 10 / 30 / and 60 second intervals until the batteries die or the SD card is full (2.5 hours). Or set it to single shot, triple shot, or self timer for more traditional photo taking.

Audio Excellence

We've invested more in the HD HERO camera's sound system than most companies spend on their entire camera development. You'll only be hearing the sounds of your sport, not the howl of the wind. How? Obsessive audio engineering and an understanding that good sound is as important as good video.

Rechargeable Lithium-Ion, Built in Battery Warmer

The rechargeable 1100mAh lithium-ion battery (included) lasts for 2.5 hours of constant recording. It can be recharged to 80% capacity in just 2 hours when plugged into a computer's USB port, or in 1 hour when plugged into a USB compatible wall or car charger. Camera can also be used while charging…handy on road trips where it's fun to leave the camera rolling. Camera also features an integrated battery heating system for keeping your battery warm in winter activities.

Shockproof, Bombproof, Waterproof to 180 Feet / 60 meters

Don't let a little water, or even a ton of water get in the way of getting the shot. Proven in heavy surf from Hawaii to Tahiti, Southern Mexico to Northern California, HD HERO cameras can handle it thanks their highly engineered polycarbonate exoskeletal housing. Waterproof to 180 feet / 60 meters and tough enough to take a spin across the asphalt, GoPros are built to take a beating. It's a GoPro...go for it.

GoPro HD Durability

GoPro HDHow about durability? Everyone is filming and uploading their extreme adventures including surfers catching 30-foot waves and mountaineers skateboarding off cliffs with bat-suits flying toward earth. It’s all the rage, but what cameras are built strong enough to take all the knocks? The GoPro HD HERO stands out from the rest and has been designed to be durable enough to be used with any sport. The cameras are incredibly shockproof and built to take whatever you can dish out. No worries if your camera skids across the asphalt.

Another feature we like is that the GoPro HERO is waterproof up to 180 feet. So what if you get caught in the pouring rain and shooting underwater or while surfing is yet another added benefit. These cameras have been proven to take awesome shots in heavy surf from Hawaii to Tahiti. Add to all that the GoPro HD Helmet HERO battery allows for up to 2 1/2 hours of recording time on a single charge, and up to 9 hours when a 32GB SD card is used. The improved battery life is especially useful in extreme weather and cold water environments.

GoPro understands that good sound is as important as good video. They’ve invested more in their cameras’ sounds systems than most companies spend on their entire camera development and it shows. The high definition sound system helps filter out unwanted wind and background noise without eliminating it completely, which allows the viewer to experience the reality of the experience. As a result, the speed, rush, and energy are enhanced by the audio as opposed to being drowned out by it.

We’re not alone in singing GoPro HD HERO praises. Look at what JPFreek Adventure Magazine who tested the camera on a cross country adventure had to say: “We like the design, compact yet impressive capabilities, as well as the ease of use…If you’re looking for an affordable, user-friendly outdoor camera, then the Hero is a perfect fit.” The GoPro camera line has received well-deserved praise from many other well-known magazines, newspapers, and television stations. After reviewing this product, we tend to agree – the Go Pro Camera opens up an entirely new world of exciting opportunities.

No matter what sport you enjoy or whether your adventures are by land or sea, Hero Go Pro HD cameras and accessories allow you to capture every amazing second of your adventures. It’s absolutely worth the investment if you’re an active outdoor athlete and want the technology to record and share your adventures.

We strongly encourage you to try out a HD GoPro HERO camera for yourself — we think you’ll agree with us when we tell you that these little babies are about as addicting as anything we’ve come across in a long while.

The bad
The GoPro Hero will drain a set of AAA batteries in about an hour, depending on usage. The tiny display features icons that are difficult to interpret without the instruction manual. Low-light performance is abysmal.
The bottom line
Small and easy to place nearly anywhere on a vehicle, the GoPro Hero Motorsports Wide is an extremely cost-effective way to document your high-speed hijinks; just make sure to buy your batteries in bulk.

Insight to Blu-Ray Players & Speaker Systems

Insight to Blu-Ray Players & Speaker Systems

  • Do you know how the inferior VHS format by JVC won against Betamax (Sony) or V2000 (Philips)?
  • Do you know what DVD stands for?
  • Do you know why is it called Blu-ray not Blue-ray?
  • Do you know what is meant by BD-Live?
  • Do you know good speakers can cost you more than your TV?
In this post, we will discuss about Blu-ray players, speaker systems. I will start with little bit of history of Blu-ray (I love history!)

Brief History of Blu-ray:

After the years of successful run of DVD format which was introduced jointly by Philips and Sony in 1995, there were successive improvements in Video and Audio quality. Initially it was enhanced storage, from 4.7GB single sided single layer to dual layer (DVD9, 8.5GB) and then double sided double layer (17GB) DVDs. DVDs were initially known as Digital Video Disc but over the years when it was used for many other purposes including data it is known more as Digital Versatile Disc.

With the advent of HD TV, a few manufactures started introducing a new feature called “up scaling” basically it upscale the DVD video (576P) to 1080i /1080P using various algorithms (ex: Faroudja)) to extrapolate to fill the extra pixels to paint it in a HD TV. But everybody knew that it is a temporary solution and it is inevitable that it should give way for a better format with much better video and sound quality

By 2002 Toshiba announced HD DVD a format which can store up to 30GB and is compatible with DVDs which was followed by the announcement of Blu-ray Sony and their partners. It is another format which uses different kind of laser and can store up to 50GB. This is announced by a group of 9 companies Hitachi, LG, Panasonic, Philips, Pioneer, Samsung, Sony, Sharp and Thomson Multimedia. It was called Blu-ray because it uses Blue violet Laser do to read and write. Missing e is intentional since they wanted to patent the name Blu-ray. With this another format war started, Blu-ray vs. HD DVD which reminded everybody of the old format war of early 80s VHS vs. Betamax (vs. V2000).

Initially Toshiba met with considerable success since HD-DVD is much cheaper to make and even they had the backing pornographic industry which tilted the scale in favor of VHS in 80s. But this is not 80s where there was no internet and people had to depend on tapes to distribute media content. We have so many other alternatives to distribute the contents and torrents were already in the horizon! So Toshiba could not get the approval without other CE giants backing them. So Sony decided to force their way through (rumor is that Sony silenced their opponents using muscle and money!) since they were facing serious challenges in their traditional TV business from Samsung and Apple iPod changed the way people listen to music. By 2008 Toshiba conceded their defeat and Blu-ray became the official standard for HD video. One year later Toshiba introduced their first Blu-ray player into the market which sealed fate of HD-DVD.

First Blu-ray player was introduced in Japan in 2003 and by 2006 it became available in international market and became the standard of choice for distributing HD content by 2008.

Region Coding

BD (Blu-ray Disc) has the same physical dimensions of a DVD or CD but a dual layer BD stores up to 50GB. Like its CD or DVD cousin BD also comes in 3 versions, pre-recorded, writeable and rewriteable. Unlike DVDs BD comes with only 3 regional coding, A, B and C. Speakers

This is one of the most crucial and costliest items in the whole Home Theater setup. The thump rule is that matching speakers for an AVR cost 3 times of its own cost. It is better to spend more money on Speakers for a better sounding system rather than spending it on AVR unless you are looking for some new essential features.

It is hard to select good speaker systems by listening to it in a mall since their setup and yours will differ a lot. So it is better to go with a well-known brand with review reports from reputed Audio magazine which conducts various tests and analysis which is not possible for consumers to do at the shopping mall J

Before going for shopping for speakers you should decide whether you need floor standing speakers or Bookshelf speakers, then powered Subwoofer or passive subwoofer etc. Floor standing speakers are the best for FR and FL (front left and right) speakers which carry most of the audio whereas the center speaker carries most of the conversations. Floor standing speakers are generally large so space is at a premium and you have convenient way to tuck in go for bookshelf speakers which are smaller but good enough. There are active (Powered) subwoofer or passive subwoofers and it can be available front firing or down firing. It is better to buy a powered subwoofer 250SW upwards for large room or 150W for a smaller room. Down firing will boost the bass more. Depending on the budget you can decide on one of the reputed brands.

Some reputed brands available in India are listed below which are no way exhaustive list. Indians generally prefer UK speakers for the kind of music we listen.
  1. Monitor Audio (UK)
  2. Wharfrdale (UK)
  3. KEF (UK)
  4. Polk Audio (USA)
  5. Bowers and Wilkins (UK)
  6. Definitive Tech
  7. Bang Olufsen (Denmark)
  8. Dali (Denmark)
  9. Polk Audio (USA)
  10. Klipsch (USA)
  11. Mordaunt Short (UK)
  12. Tannoy (UK)
Speaker placement is very important and please remember that your auto tuning system (Audyssey MultEQ) cannot move your speakers it can only calibrate and tune. So better to read a little bit first before placing the speakers. For better listening experience place all the speakers at ear level except the subwoofer and place the center speaker at the bottom of the TV.

Once the speakers are setup use the built in auto tuning system of AVR (ex: Audyssey MultEQ) for tuning the speakers. This may not be perfect but think it as a starting point. Now take a tape and measure the actual distance of all the speakers and correct in the setup menu and use decibel meter (if possible) to correct the audio levels.
